Week 1 and 2:

We will be assembling our keyword and long tail keyword phrases list for the subject MoneyLegs.com and building our website copy.

You will be given homework assignments that include building your first web page copy around three major but relevant keywords and one long tail keyword phrase.

We will be exploring how Search Engines work and how to think like they do. As you gain understanding of the concepts involved, you will have gained the knowledge to use this duplicatable process over and over again with any business.

It is extremely critical you follow each of the steps thoroughly, and even if you are not quite sure what is happening, please complete the tasks in sequence. The most IMPORTANT part of this concept is your ability to follow the program as laid out. This will be of huge assistance when you are ready to moderate your personal SWARM group.

SOME OF THE TERMS WE WILL BE USING:

LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing)
Google’s new algorithm will scan phrases on a webpage, and then analyze these phrases to predict what other (latent-related)
phrases should be on the page. Some phrases will be flagged as “preferred” phrases (which will help give you more “points”), other phrases will be flagged as “poor” phrases (which will decrease your “points”).
Too many phrases on a webpage and Google will label you as spam.

SERPS:
Short for Search Engine Results Page. The web page that a search engine returns with the results of its search. The major search engines typically display three kinds of listings on their SERPS. Listings that have been indexed by the search engine’s spider, listings that have been indexed into the search engine’s directory by a human, and listings that are paid to be listed by the search engine.

LONG TAIL KEYWORDS:
Long tail keywords are keyword phrases which are less popular, less competitive and less searched for. When taken collectively choosing the right long tail keywords can significantly increase website traffic from organic search results (SERPS) even to a new domain, improving website performance and sales conversions by driving up revenues from unpaid search engine placement. Here is a great explanation of long tail keywords and their effectiveness: http://www.wordtracker.com/academy/target_long_tail_keywords/

KEYWORD DENSITY:
The number of occurrences of a keyword on a page divided by the number of words on a page. More is not necessarily better, as search engines look for a certain ratio rather than the highest ratio. If repeated too often, it could lead to the page being penalized for spamming.

  • A rule of thumb is 2% - less than 5% in 300 word copy

  • A goal could be to work on longer web copy that will allow the use of up to 20% keyword density against word count.

When preparing your web site and keyphrases, you should think about the old fashioned “Library Card System” When a librarian got in a new book, they had to CATEGORIZE it. This is what they would do with the book; they would file a card in the card catalog under TITLE, DATE, ISBN, AUTHOR, DESCRIPTION, etc.

Let’s say the librarian got in the book "Online Marketing Success". The librarian would make sure it was categorized under such terms as Richards, Rene V, Issue Date, ISBN Number, Short Description and then make a card with that information for the categories: targeted visitors, targeted traffic, online success, affiliate marketing, affiliate programs, membership sites, metasearch engine, online business, sales page, sales copy, etc. (Of course, nowadays they would simply enter it into the computer under those terms). But think about having to do this manually.

Search Engine Optimization is based on the same principle. This is how you want to think about your website. The search engine spiders will classify you in the CATEGORY you give them. Your Title will determine the category and your keywords and keyword phrases will help you by pulling in visitors interested in those keywords and keyphrases through the links you use with them.

You will have the following as your goal for this course:

  1. Create a search engine friendly web site

  2. Develop a well-organized list of popular, targeted keywords/key phrases

  3. Optimize your web pages for those keywords/key phrases

  4. Attract and/or obtain large numbers of relevant high-quality links to those optimized web pages

  5. Analyze and improve the results of your optimization campaign     (We will deal with #4 and 5 later in the course).
